What Is Cataract?

A cataract is a condition where the natural lens of the eye becomes cloudy over time, leading to blurry or dim vision. This clouding prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, resulting in a gradual loss of visual clarity. Although it is most commonly age-related, cataracts can also be caused by diabetes, eye trauma, long-term use of corticosteroids, radiation exposure, or congenital factors.

If left untreated, cataracts can lead to significant visual impairment or even blindness. Therefore, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for preserving vision.

Common Symptoms of Cataracts

Cataracts often begin with subtle symptoms but progressively interfere with daily life. The most common signs include:

  • Blurred, cloudy, or foggy vision

  • Faded or yellow-tinted colors

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription

  • Glare or increased sensitivity to light

  • Difficulty seeing at night

  • Double or shadowed vision in one eye

If you’re experiencing one or more of these symptoms, we recommend scheduling a comprehensive eye examination.

How Are Cataracts Treated?

The only permanent and effective treatment for cataracts is surgery. Medications or glasses cannot reverse or stop the progression of cataracts. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Thanks to modern technology, the procedure is safe, comfortable, and quick.

Phacoemulsification Technique

The most commonly used and successful surgical method is phacoemulsification (phaco). This minimally invasive technique uses ultrasonic waves to break up the cloudy lens, which is then removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens. The procedure usually takes about 10–15 minutes and patients can go home the same day.

Artificial lenses are selected based on the patient’s needs and lifestyle. Options such as monofocal, multifocal, and trifocal lenses can provide enhanced near and distance vision.

Most patients go home the same day. Vision typically improves within a few days, with full recovery expected in 2–4 weeks. You will be prescribed eye drops and follow-up appointments will be arranged.
Cataracts do not return once the natural lens is replaced with an artificial one. However, in rare cases, a condition called posterior capsule opacification (PCO) may occur, which can be easily treated with a painless laser procedure.
No, cataract surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia and is painless. Patients may feel slight pressure during the procedure, but not pain. After the surgery, most people experience only mild discomfort or a slight stinging sensation. If needed, your doctor may prescribe eye drops or mild pain relievers to ensure your comfort.
